Best tips to take care of your teeth

According to dentists, these innocent everyday practices can seriously affect your smile.

You may think that you have incredible oral hygiene if you brush, floss every day and stay away from sweets.

However, many, apparently innocent, everyday practices can damage your teeth – causing deterioration, damaging the enamel or literally breaking them in half.

The dental surgeon, Alex Sharifian, of Irvine, California, indicates that “the enamel of the teeth is extremely strong, but it is not resistant to everything”.

So if you want to keep your teeth strong and healthy, dentists recommend avoiding these habits:

Chewing ice    

You can easily dismantle, throw away an amalgam or even break a tooth, chewing ice.

“You’re basically chewing stones,” says dental surgeon Jonathan Schwartz. The dentist at Manhattan Dental Health and a teacher at Columbia College in New York.

“Although our teeth are equipped with the strongest material in our bodies, they are not designed to withstand that kind of stress,” he adds.

Sorber sports drinks

The combination of acid, sugar and chemical components of sports drinks can weaken the enamel, creating gaps that bacteria could take advantage of.

“Consuming excessive amounts of these drinks can be worse for your dental health than drinking soda,” says Dr. Sharifian.

If it is imperative that you take a Gatorade or some equivalent, take it all in one sitting – instead of sipping it during the day, which increases the time of exposure of your teeth – and consider taking it through a straw.

Rinse your mouth with water after taking it or chew sugar-free gum to neutralize the acids. Do the same when you drink soda. Keep reading

Use your teeth as a tool

Using your teeth to open bottles, remove labels from clothing, or open plastic bags can cause debris, breaks or fractures.

In addition, you can also cause serious injuries inside your mouth or even unbalance your jaw, which can cause pain.

“I promise you that scissors or a knife are 100% more effective than your teeth to open any package,” says Dr. Schwartz. “The teeth are not designed to chew feathers, lenses or straws, or to act as a third hand when you’re carrying things,” he adds.

You may not realize how much pressure you are subjecting to your teeth, and this can cause them to fall or the enamel to be damaged.

Eat many carbohydrates

Bread, pasta, and cookies do not seem to be junk food so sugary, but they quickly turn into sugar in your mouth.

“The bacteria in your mouth eat sugar, causing your teeth to deteriorate,” says dental surgeon Gregg Lituchy of the Lowenberg, Lituchy and Kantor clinic in New York. “I try not to eat so many processed foods, but if I’m going to eat a big plate of pasta, I’m going to brush my teeth immediately afterward, before the bacteria turn those sugars into acids that corrode my teeth .”

Do not keep your toothbrush

Leave your brush your teeth in the sink – specifically in a bowl with brushes more people- is an invitation to bacteria and can easily infect you of something for a family member.

“It’s not that our mouths are not already full of bacteria,” adds Schwartz, “but you do not want to add to that mixture other things that float in the air of the baths.”

Try to keep your brush teeth in the medicine cabinet or use a disposable protector for the brush.

Use rinsing mouth without rinse at the end

Mouthwash is great for removing bacteria that may have been saved from brushing and flossing, but the remaining alcohol can dry out your mouth, preparing it for the worst.

“Harmful bacteria thrive in dry environments,” explains Carolyn Ghazal, a dental surgeon in Irvine, California.

Fissures in the tongue and throughout the mouth are more exposed when the mouth is dry, so bacteria can easily stay there.

Buy an alcohol-free rinse or rinse with water after use.

Eat popcorn

Corn kernels (which are not completely burst) are a problem for the fillings of your molars.

“If you have fillings in your teeth and a grain is trapped between the filling and the tooth and you bite it, you can break the tooth in half,” says Dr. Lituchy.

“I have patients who come with broken teeth and I ask them popcorn? and they are surprised. It is the number one cause of broken teeth, “he explains.

Capillary in a bad moment

Brushing immediately after eating is usually wise, but avoid doing so after eating something very acidic such as wine, coffee, soda, citrus or fruit juice.

“After eating something very acidic like a fruit smoothie, which is very acid, the enamel of your teeth temporarily weakens,” explains Dr Lituchy. “Wait 45 minutes before brushing to give your saliva time to dilute the acidity.”

Otherwise, he explains, abrasion of your brush in the weakened enamel can cause damage. You can also rinse with water to help neutralize the acid.

Capillary too strong

Being thorough is good, being violent is not.

Brushing too hard can not only irritate your gums and make teeth more sensitive to low temperatures but can actually damage the enamel, opening the door to decay.

One way to ensure proper brushing is to use a soft bristle brush, which is firm enough to remove plaque, but soft enough to avoid the damage caused by even the most enthusiastic brushing.

Do not together for nothing

We all have those days where dragging us to bed takes almost all the energy we have left.

“At that moment of self-evaluation – about the real risk of not brushing – I always stand up and go brush myself,” says Dr Schwartz. “We always find time to brush in the mornings, but at night. Before going to bed, it’s really the most critical moment.”

This is because the plaque, which forms on the teeth during the day. Can calcify and become tartar in 24 hours.

And at that point, you can not just brush it and remove it with dental floss. It has to be removed by a dentist.

Do not use mascara

Chewing gums with sugar are obviously a dental mistake, but chewing gum without sugar improves oral health.

“Saliva is your body’s natural defense against cavities. So what you can do to increase the production of saliva, especially after eating, will help protect your mouth from dryness.

“I tell my patients that chewing gum without sugar with xylitol after eating is a great way to combat not only bad breath but to prevent cavities,” says Dr. Schwartz.

Xylitol is a natural sweetener, made with plants. That prevents bacteria from sticking to your teeth and has been shown to remove bacteria that cause cavities from your mouth.

Suck things

Surely you know that the sticky and sweet sweets that stay in your mouth. Paletas, candy, sweets and others – are not approved by dentists, says Dr. Sharifian.

But many of us suck other kinds of things, including pills for colds and lemon slices. Which can cause tooth damage?

Many cold pills contain refined sugar, so they are no better than sweets. Unless you read on the label that you have little or no sugar.

Lemons are very acidic and repeated exposure to this can corrode the enamel of your teeth. It’s okay if you squeeze it in your drinks, but do not brush afterward.

Dentists recommend that you undergo dental cleanings every six months. But many people skip it, which can cause long-term problems, explains Dr. Schwartz.

“Usually in the mouth, small problems grow slowly,” he adds. “This is because six months turn into a year and then two or three months. That little cavity that was not causing any problems suddenly becomes a much bigger problem. Which usually requires more expensive treatment”.
